In the United States, Americans vote for politicians to represent them in the government. They make laws. Puerto Ricans do the same thing. People vote for politicians who meet and make important decisions. Puerto Rico also has a Supreme Court that hears court cases.

In 2003, the United States finally stopped bombing Vieques. The Puerto Ricans had won.

This was just one bad experience, though. Usually, things like this don’t happen. Most Puerto Ricans are happy to be American citizens. In fact, half of the world’s Puerto Ricans live in the United States!

Puerto Rican and American

People who live in Puerto Rico can get pretty confused. Are they Puerto Rican? Are they American?

They’re both. Most people are proud to be American citizens. They are equally proud to be part of Puerto Rican culture.

Puerto Rican culture has a lot to do with Spanish culture. It has a lot to do with native Arawak culture. It has a lot to do with West African culture. It also has a lot to do with American culture. But in the end, Puerto Ricans have their own culture!

A Puerto Rican author wrote, “Of course I’m Puerto Rican. I am also American. I am both. There isn’t a Puerto Rican alive that hasn’t been affected by American culture.”
